On July 13, 2022, ASHP announced the launch of the newly updated Outsourcing Sterile Products Vendor Assessment Tool for pharmacy and other healthcare purchasers to provide insights and considerations when evaluating outsourcing vendors.
Data from the 2020 ASHP National Survey of Hospital Pharmacy Practice and from a recent drug shortage survey shows that outsourcing is a common strategy facilities use to manage drug and personnel shortages. Recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance also encourages the use of 503B outsourcing facilities for anticipatory-use compounded sterile preparations. The ASHP Outsourcing Sterile Products Vendor Assessment Tool has been completely refreshed with new features and updated considerations. The tool guides purchasers through key decisions and factors to consider when selecting a 503B outsourcing provider.
